THE RULES OF PICKLEBALL
-
GENERAL RULES OF PICKLEBALL
1. Pickleball is played as singles (1 vs 1) or doubles (2 vs 2)
2. To start a pickleball point, the serve must be underhand, and it must land diagonally cross-court past the kitchen line.
-
SCORING
• Games are normally played to 11, 15, or 21 win by 2 points.
• A team can only score if they are serving.
• Each player on a team will serve until they lose a point except for the first team to serve, they only have one chance.
• If you make an incorrect serve or a fault, the next serve either goes to your teammate if you're playing doubles or it goes directly to your opponent.
-
FUNKY RULES
This is where pickleball differentiates itself from other racquet games.
2- Bounce Rule
This is potentially the most unique and important rule to the game. (also the one that beginners forget the most)• When the ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce before returning, and then the serving team must let it bounce before returning, hence two bounces.
• After the ball has bounced once in each team’s court, it’s anything goes! Players can then hit the ball out of the air or off the bounce.
-
THE NON-VOLLEY ZONE (KITCHEN)
• The Kitchen as it is referred to (hence the name Courtside Kitchen) is a 7 foot area on either side of the net.
• To prevent players smashing, volleying (hitting the ball out of the air) is prohibited within the non-volley zone!
• When volleying a ball, the team automatically loses the point if the player steps onto the non-volley zone.
• It is also a fault if their momentum carries them into the kitchen even after a volley is struck.
• A player can step enter the kitchen at any point so long as the ball is bouncing, and they are not volleying.
